Black Lives Matter
Our nation finally woke up. Injustices that the black community has been telling the rest of the country about for years has finally been recognized by the rest of the population. And the population is outraged. While it may have taken far too long for this anger and demand for justice to arrive there is finally change taking place.
So how does this relate to beauty?
Firstly representation. The black community has consistantly been underrepresented in the mainstream media especially within the beauty industry including wedding publications. We’ve always thought that black is beautiful and finally people are celebrating this.
Secondly, proper hair styling and education. African American and black hair is not “hard” to style but it is different than other types of hair textures. We like to think of hair as fabric and there’s various types depending upon the density, thickness of each follicle and curl pattern. Sadly so often stylists only stay in the lane of their own hair texture but now knowledge of various hair textures is being praised. All of our stylists will be as comfortable with all textures: from 1a to 4b and beyond.
Thirdly is a history lesson. Styles evolve over time and unfortunately people are guilty of looking only at what’s “pretty” but not actually learning how it came into existence. Cornrows are cultural. Bantu knots are cultural. We will be diving into some history lessons for you in the coming weeks and months because to really appreciate these styles you need to know their origin.
We have always celebrated the black community, POC, and their beauty that should be celebrated. Curls are amazing ! Textured hair is gorgeous! We will always be there for you to elevate your voices. We hope to serve you in the future. We believe that black lives matter.
