Celebrating LGBTQ+ Couples
We have ALWAYS welcomed & celebrated ALL couples from every religion, ethnicity, hair type, texture, tradition orientation etc and more. This is a safe place for all couple to reach out with their dreams of a beautiful wedding & happy marriage. The thing though is that we wanted to take our love & acceptance to the next level.
So we enrolled in Equally Wed’s Certified Inclusive course. It was a full on course with lessons, homework & yes a test! But you know what I’m so glad we did because even though our hearts were always in the right place there were subtle things we could do better. Like instead of “bridal party” you’ll see “wedding party” & instead of “bride” you’ll see “marrier”. We have extensively checked our website, contracts , etc to verify that everything is gender neutral. See something we missed? Tell me ! We’ve also made a point to ask every contracted couple not only their preferred pronouns but the preferred pronouns of all those receiving hair services.
But why stop there? No, we’ve committed to continued education via documentaries, (have you see Disclosure yet?AMAZING!), books (The Gay Agenda is up next) and being more involved even if it is just virtually for the time being. You may ask why. Well, growing up as a cishet woman I only know 1st hand my perspective. I believe if I really want to understand & serve the LGBTQ+ community with the justice they deserve then I need to do everything in my power to empathetic experience as much as I can.
Our next big thing on the calendar is an LGBTQ+ styled shoot. While hair may be hair people fall in love with images that reflect a narrative of romance & happy endings. So even if someone loves the hairstyle in an image it’s not immediately a match made if they do’t see themselves represented in that narrative. So instead of expecting couples to just love our hair work or take a leap of faith we are doing a LGBTQ+ styled shoot with 3 vignettes in 3 totally different styles & 3 real couples. We wanted to showcase various ways LGBTQ+ couples can see themselves in the industry & let that develop naturally.
If you are a vendor, I highly recommend you look into the resources of places like Equally Wed. Even if you think you’re doing “good enough” you can probably do better. This isn’t about me or you (the vendors ) though. This is about our couples & making sure they are celebrated & the way the deserve to be!
Happy Pride Everyone !
